This song is not about one particular person. Rather, it tries to capture the indomitable but quixotic spirit of some people I’ve met, particularly in northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin. I wouldn’t call folks like this misfits. But they do congregate away from urban centers, at least in my experience, and have a strong need for independence and to follow whatever quirky enthusiasm that seizes them. Most all of these involve the outdoors or machines. They are not always men. But in this song, I wanted to explore, however briefly, how people like this affect those around them.  It’s always a mix of bewilderment, pride, and foreboding.
