Wrong Side of Town

I grew up on the wrong side of town
That would have been clear
If I had looked around
But when you’re a kid, you just don’t see
The signs of poverty
And I always kept my eyes on the ground.

My friends and I faced a kind of plight
Should we get drunk
Or should we just go fight?
It was clear to see
Nothing would come of me
And I could hear that lonely train call at night.

Chorus
I could hear that lonely train call at night.
Maybe I should just get away
What on earth
Would make me want to stay?
But to my family and my friends
I need to make amends
And I don’t run when I’ve got debts to pay.

I still live in the house where I was born
Every single inch of it is worn
And the walls are filled with cracks
Because it’s next to the railroad tracks
Fix it up or burn it down
I’m kind of torn.

People say that it could be worse
But that kind of hope
Can become a curse
It keeps you in your place
Keeps you out of the chase
To see what you really might be worth.

Chorus
Fix it up or burn it down
I am kind of torn
I keep my eyes on the ground
I can hear that lonely train whistle sound
Yeah, I was born on the wrong side of town.
