The Raft
When we built the raft and carried it down to the stream
That took us to where the river flowed
A Huck Finn dream.
But the water was high
So rough and so fast
The farms sped by
Like a trip through the past
And then the river came.
First chorus
At the 1st bridge
Get out while we can
Will never try doing something like this again
But as we swept by
It seemed that we’d be
Carried out to the sea.
We did our best
To make our way
Back to the bank
Where we could say we were safe on the land
But we just spun away.
And the raft
That seemed so secure
Now we weren’t so sure
Not so safe and strong
As water appeared
Where once there was wood.
Second chorus
At the last bridge
Get out while we can
We’ll never try
Something like this again
But as we swept by
It seemed that we’d be
Carried out to the sea
What would they find
If ever we are found
The warmth of a life
Or the cold of the drowned.
