Skeleton Train

There’s a valley that runs north to south
Near a Midwest town
And an old trestle bridge that crosses it
For the trains that are westward bound.

The trees that cover the valley floor
Have escaped the farm and the plow
By the time we were 14 years
We knew every inch of that ground.

I don’t think I could find that valley now.

Chorus
But in the night time
When I hear a train‘s soft thrumming

I think of a crossing
And all of the world to wander.

We walked across that bridge
On a hope and a dare
Trusting trains wouldn’t come by
The trains, they slowed when they got there
Riding between earth and sky

And sometimes we would ride along
Just for the thrill of the ride
We grew older as time went on
And rode the trains far and wide

I don’t think I could do that now.

Chorus

On one of those trips
We met a girl
Who was riding the rails alone
She showed us a very different world
Davey said he would follow her
Anywhere she would go
But I, I just stayed home

Chorus

There’s a valley that runs north to south
Near a Midwest town
And an old trestle bridge that crosses it
For the trains that are homeward bound.
