I’ve never been a farmer, nor did I grow up on a farm. I did grow up near them and some of my best friends growing up were farmer’s kids. I always thought I would have liked being a farmer. I don’t mind the hard work and there is a connection to nature and an inherent independence, despite all the hardships of so many kinds, that appealed to me.
With some of my work as a volunteer, I still feel connected to farms and the land.
This song is about a farmer who has just retired and sold his farm. I have a friend who just sold the family farm that her family had originally started in 1855. It’s a painful, painful process. I wanted to catch a little of that sorrow with the words and the music.
